Dunbar Barber Academy was first formed in the mind of it’s managing instructor Martio Harris. Dunbar’s original name was going to be Kingdom Kutz Barber Institute. A gentleman by the name of Cressworth Landers, a philanthropist and successful business man, approached Martio with the concept of putting a college inside a not-for-profit project called the Dunbar Coalition Project. They both agreed that it was a great idea and went full steam ahead. Dunbar Project is a multimillion dollar project that encourages and empowers minorities to be better citizens. We provide excellent instructional courses for students that want to expand their horizons.
The official opening date for Dunbar was August 4th 2007. At the time of our commencement our training courses had the capacity of 15 students. We are beginning to expand to different areas around the state. The owner/ head instructor is Martio Harris, a master barber since 1993. Barbering changed the life of Martio and can change your life also. Martio Harris along with the other instructors are great leaders, and will go all out to help the striving student excel and have a great time doing it. Martio Harris owns his own barbershops (Kingdom Kutz, Tio’s Mastercutz) and will employ some students based on ability, capability, and availability. We will also work with local area shops to create employment opportunities for our graduates.
We believe that barbering is not just a profession but also a ministry. You touch thousands of people a year in this profession, and we teach our students how to “touch“ them in the right way.
Dunbar Barber Academy is required by the state to log the students time cards monthly to ensure all necessary hours are completed before state board testing is offered.
